Rhubey Posted February 7, 2010 Share Posted February 7, 2010 on 02 legacy outback 5spd.... Has anyone replaced the (9)rollerbearing, (11)seal, & (13)Oring w/o pulling & opening the 5spd Xfer case?? I have been able to reduce rattle by tightening these before by 1-2 teeth, but now i have one that should be replaced, i think. Minor leak & rattle. GeneralDisorder Posted February 7, 2010 Share Posted February 7, 2010 The roller bearings are pressed onto the diff carrier - removing and installing them requires removing the diff from the transmission. Fairtax4me Posted February 8, 2010 Share Posted February 8, 2010 It is quite time consuming to tear apart the transmission, but mostly because of having to clean all of the sealing surfaces before you can put it back together. You may find other bearings in need of replacement while you're in there, and some of them can be pretty pricey, but it's well worth the time and money invested if done properly. If you're doing on side of the diff, might as well go for broke and do both. Be sure to read up on adjusting the backlash, looks like you have the manual there so you should have all the technical info you need for the job.
