February 12, 201016 yr I have a '91 Loyale w/ 6" lift. I keep blowing out the rear Brakes. This will be the 3rd time (in about 2 yrs) when I fix this time. So, I was thinking what would it take to put disc brakes in the rear. Has anyone done this? What would I need? Any suggestions would be great - THANKS!!!
February 12, 201016 yr Rear hubs, discs, calipers, and backing plates off of any ea82 car that came with them will bolt right on. I know they came on most if not all GL10's and turbo xt's as well I think? I've been told that you also need to get the rear proportioning valve from the donor car but I don't really know if that's truth or tale, I didn't when I installed them on my loyale and everything seems to work just fine for my liking. Maybe someone can chime in here to cofirm and explain why, or deny the whole proportioning valve theory. Spencer
February 12, 201016 yr I did this conversion on my brat. Did not put the valve in when I did it. The brat stops way faster. I never heard about the vlave being installed but I did hear about putting the master cylinder in. Either way I wouldn't worry about it. And yet if you are going to worry about it, put it in! Or just do the conversion and see what it does. You can always put the stuff in later.
February 13, 201016 yr been done hundreds of times. there's a great write-up on it in the USRM (it's old, so you'll have to go to page 2). proportioning valve is only an issue on non-EA82 cars. they're definitely different than EA81s. but if you're just replacing the drums on an EA82, you're set.
February 13, 201016 yr I've done a few rear disc brake conversions and the '84 Brat that I did it in would lock the rears up pretty easily on roads where traction was less then dry pavement. Anywhere from gravel to snowy conditions. Just a thought.
February 13, 201016 yr ^^^^^Its good to remember you don't have that valve in your ea81. My ea81 wagon is a bit touchy in the rain, say, getting off at an offramp. Listening for the rear to lock up and the front not at all close to locking. Ea82s already have the valve.
February 13, 201016 yr Weird that some people are having lockin up issues with EA81s. Is everyone that is having this issue running stock or stock type tires. I have never had mine lock up on my at all, even when its icy out.
