February 21, 201016 yr I have recently purchased a 1998 subaru legacy GT, installed a used motor from a 1999 GT. The problem is my AWD seems to work in reverse (back wheels will spin on ice) but the AWD does not work in forward (rear wheels do not spin on ice). I used the transmission from the 1998. Help.

The problem is my AWD seems to work in reverse (back wheels will spin on ice) but the AWD does not work in forward (rear wheels do not spin on ice). I used the transmission from the 1998. Help. my guess would be the drums on the transfer clutch has wear spots in it/them which keep it from engaging and forward wear is greater then reverse wear. try unplugging the wire harness to the trans and test driving it that way. you'll be in limp mode, 3rd gear only, and should have torque bind in tight turns since the awd should be 'locked' in 4wd. you can try new fluid that is usually the first fix .... but may be looking at repair, smoothing / grinding out the wear spots on the hub/s or replacement of the parts. there is a very good thread w/ pics on how to do it, if that is your need .

When you say fluid do you mean my regular transmission fluid or is there something else in the transfer case portion? and if it is in the transfer how do i change that? Is there a drain and fill plug? Also the link you attached is for timing belt, could you post the link for the transfer?
February 21, 201016 yr regular trans fluid. i wouldn't be too optimistic but it can't hurt. some one should have a link to the repair thread with the pics of smoothing out the grooves. the dealer will repair this for 1000$.

Anybody have an idea what I need to do? I am very capable of doing the repair if I only knew what to do.

February 24, 201016 yr Author the car does move. After trying to trouble shoot tonight I have discovered the following. the AWD works when you first start the car for about a minute or less. I can shut the car off, restart and again the AWD will work for about a minute or less, and I can just keep doing this. I have the same results if I do this in low and if I have the transmission electrical plug unplugged. I really am now not convinced its my clutch pack because I can make work just by turning it off and restarting it.
