Mass Airflow Sensor Interchangeability

I'm gonna head to the junkyard tomorrow and get a MAF. I have a '97 OBS with a the long block of an EJ22 out of a '95 Legacy. I can use the MAF from any first gen Legacy right? What else is interchangeable?

Looking at the inventory a U Pull I can choose from:

'93 or '95 Imp

'93 or '95 Leg

'97 or '98 Outback

Look at the part number on the side of your current MAF and just match whatever you get to it.

Fro my research all of those vehicles are likely candidates.

I was recently there with my 98 OBS and will give you the link to my thread from last month with part #s. You will find different #s but they are still interchangeable parts. I have since picked up another MAF that also has that same different # than mine to carry as a spare, it also works fine. The total price for 2 separate listings on Ebay including shipping came to $39. These were small gambles compared to some of the other prices out there for new OR used ones so I made out. I will get one more to keep on hand if I see a deal like those again. My OBS will only hit 56K next time it goes out for the day so I will have it for quite a while.

I went thru emissions this past Wednesday by the way. Here is the link to the thread with #s.

I believe the MAF from any EJ engine before about 2000 will work. I'm not sure exactly when it changed, but if it bolts up and the harness matches, it will work. My '96 legacy has a MAF from a gen1 subaru. I think 1991 or something. Got it from a U pull yard.

I think you need the MAF to be matched to whatever ECU/harness you have.

I grabbed one from each, an Imp, Leg, and Outback. The Imp and Leg were both EJ22s and the Outback was an EJ25. The Leg and Outback have identical part numbers (despite the Leg being an EJ22 and the Outback being an EJ25). The Imp has almost an identical part number (it is missing one character, an F, in the part number)

They all have the same bolt pattern to the air filter box, same pin numbers, same connector.

Time to to go play musical MAFs =P

They'll all work. (as long as none of them are defective, that is)

I swapped on the Outback one and it works fine.
