Need ej25 to ej22 advice.

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been posted somewhere else, I am new to this site but in my searches I didn't get all the answers I wanted.

I want to put a ej22 into a 97 legacy outback with a automatic transmission AWD Wagon.

I was wandering a few things. 1 does it matter what ej22 I get as long as i have all the parts off the 2.5? 2 does it matter if the ej22 was on a standard or automatic car? 3 What all would I have to swap as far as wiring and the computer goes? 4 and I got to make sure I get this right, If I am going to get an emissions check done on this after I do the swap will I have any problems? Is there any other info I need to know? Thanks.

Needs to be out of a 95 automatic to bolt in.

96 up it will need a single port exhaust manifold, but will bolt in otherwise.

Needs to be out of an automatic to have EGR.

Swap the flexplate from the 2.5 to the 2.2, won't fit otherwise.

Swap A/C compressor bracket too, and use the 2.5 compressor.

No wiring as long as it's a 95-99 automatic.

95-98 2.2 automatic. 99 2.2 is a phase 2 engine.

In the legacy's too? I know it went phase 2 in the imps, but I thought it stayed the same with the legacys.

Funny thing was I had "98", then changed it to "99" before I posted because I was unsure.

Yes legacy too. 99 legacy 2.2 is a phase 2 engine.

Damn so it looks like I need to find a 95. I can find a bunch that are not 95s but they need the damn single port headers. Ummmm is there an adapter plate of any sort to make a single work with whatever the 97 I have has in it?

just get a single port exhaust header and expand your option. it's only two more bolts and a gasket.

like this guy did:

now, if you can't find one that's another issue. but surely someone on here probably has one to sell. not bad to ship, don't need boxed, just strap a shipping tag to it and wrap it if you want.

ref told me you can't go backwards --the shell has to be older or same age as the engine. if you mismatch the auto/ stick ecu, you will throw 51 and 52 codes relating to the auto trans--

I just put an old ej22 in--auto in a manual trans shell

todd

I put a 96 manual 2.2(no egr) into a 97 obw that had a 2.5 with EGR and it runs mint except for the EGR code.

So say I have a motor out of a 96 with a 2.2 and I have the headers that came with it (single port motor) then all I would have to do is bolt that header to my cat/exhaust on my 97 that had the 2.5 correct?

ding! ding! ding! we have a winner. you are correct.

bolt it in and drive away.

remember to use the 2.5 flex plate if it is an auto trans.
