What to look for when buying a used scooby

Featured Replies

I'm going to look at an 88 GL wagon tonight, and I thought I remembered seeing a faq somewheres around here about what to look for. If anyone can point me to it or offer some advice, it'd be much appreciated.

Rust

CV Axles (listen for bearing noise in the front end as well)

Clutch

Oil Leaks

Lifter Tapping.

That's what I'd look for at least, I'm sure others have other things to keep an eye out for. I've never heard of the FAQ, but then, I havent been active on the board long.

oil leaks, smoke, temp gauge, trans sounds, etc and all of what syphon said too

;)

Ok ok... wacky idea. Syphon is picking up a new car this weekend. He has a 1985 GL wagon that will be up for sale. Wouldn't you rather buy from a goon?

I can vouch for all the work done on it, since I was either doing it or near by when it was being done. Nice car.

Perhaps. I'm looking at an 88 GL wagon in Greenlake I spotted on craigslist this morning. My Taurus finally got fixed (drove it for 4 months stuck in 2nd gear, 5spd) for the uberlow price of 20$ and 2 six packs by Clary's automotive, only to now have a customer of mine point out that two weeks ago I didn't have brake lights. After replacing the bulbs and shorting the stoplamp switch with a paperclip, still no brake lights.

and syphon hasn't mentioned selling his.

That's because it's not DEFINATELY up for sale until tomorrow, when I'll be buying myself a new Legacy :-)

I'll let you know tomorrow.
