April 6, 201015 yr Forgive a newbie for needing a little hand holding, tried searching but still unsure... I recently bought an '85 Brat already converted to 5 spd d/r, but with a very soft clutch. Based on what I've read here I'll need the kit for the EA82, but it looks like there's two sizes (7-7/8" and 8-7/8"). I have no idea where the transmission came from, so is there a way to determine which is the correct kit? Is there anything else I need to know before I go in? Thanks in advance, Joe
April 6, 201015 yr I believe with the EA 82 4wd you want the 8 7/8 diameter unit (24 spline) if I'm not mistaken the 7 7/8 is 21 spline and used on the front wheel drive transaxles.
April 6, 201015 yr Yeah the smaller spline is the front wheel drive. I just put a XT6 clutch in my 85 brat w/ d/r 5 spd.
April 6, 201015 yr order for a 1990 loyale 4wd 5spd, you cant go wrong. the smaller disc is for fwd's
April 6, 201015 yr It depends on how the conversion was done. It can be done two ways - with a 4 speed flwheel/PP and 5 speed disc, or with all 5 speed components and the timing marks transfered over to the 5 speed flywheel and a bit of material ground off the engine's bell-housing. It will be a 225mm clutch setup as the 200mm for the FWD's and very old 4WD's will not fit the input shaft on the 5 speed 4WD tranny. You will have to tell us which flywheel it has for us to answer correctly as to what you need. A picture of the timing marks and the flywheel would likely help. GD
April 7, 201015 yr Author If that's the case, I'm wondering if I can tell by examining the bell housing to look for the "modification" prior to separating the engine. Or... any idea how many teeth there are on the EA81 flywheel? If I mark one tooth and count while I turn it one revolution would that work? The concern here is that I'm borrowing a hoist from a friend, and I'd hate to have it tied up any longer than necessary. It never seems to work out as planned, but I want to at least attempt to have all my ducks in a row ahead of time! Again, thanks a bunch for any and all input! Joe
April 10, 201015 yr You won't be able to see the modification to the bell-housing with the engine still mated to the tranny. If you can take a bright, clear picture of the flywheel from the timing mark hole I can tell which flywheel you have. Another way is to look for TDC on the #1 cylinder and see if it corresponds to the timing marks - and if it does - is there another set on the flywheel about 30* away from the correct set? That will indicate a 5 speed flywheel that has been retro-fitted. GD
April 12, 201015 yr That is the 4 speed flywheel. So now you have a problem - did they use the 4 speed pressure plate or the 5 speed...... *most* of the 5 speed clutch discs will not fit the inside diameter of the 4 speed pressure plate. The trick is to buy one for an '85 or '86 - those are the one's that fit. Until you open it up - unfortunately there's no way to tell. The only thing you know for sure is that they used the 5 speed disc, T/O bearing, and pilot bearing. You won't know which pressure plate till you open it up. GD
April 15, 201015 yr Could you tell by pulling the starter out? The outer edge of the two 4 speed flywheels where the pressure plate bolts up should look different.
