Hi all , has anyone got close up pics of these twin row L radiators as in not the advertisement ones ?

 

Are these all copper/brass radiators and not the alloy core plastic things .

Here in Australia we only got the single 16mm thick cores and I'm trying to get a 32mm thick twin tube one made up . I could sure use the wide brass tanks if they are available .

 

I gather there are no probs getting the std shroud and elec fan on the back as per normal ?

It certainly makes it tighter but its still doable. Of all the places to need one of these I am amazed you dont have them down there.

I agree considering how hot and dry parts of Australia can get .

I guess the thing is that we didn't get many turbo EA82 cars here , basically just the RX Turbo sedans and a few XT4s .

 

Just for a history lesson did you get twin core radiators std in the States ? I have heard rumors that turbo auto cars over there got them std but not here .

 

I have a radiator mob that has the founder due to retire soon , being from the days before aluminium rads he should be able to make something up that's same as your twin core ones .

 

He assures me that having twin cores should make a sizable difference over the single one .

 

If you have any pics that would be good , mainly want to see if the top and bottom straps are central on the tanks or offset a bit .

 

Also it may be possible to use bolts rather than studs and nuts on the fans hub , bolts out and lift straight up .

One came std in my 90 RS (Leone) s/r 5 1.8 spfi, std in the 88 RX and I pulled one out of an '87 GL Wagon with a s/r 5 with a 1.8 spfi... I didn't think they were any big deal until I came here, then read that they were not entirely common.

I've always been under the impression that the extra rows on a multi-row radiator are added to the frontside, keeping engineside clearances basically the same. Not 100% positive on that though..

 

As for mounting the waterpump mounted fan;

Yeah, you can replace the studs/nuts with bolts. But,, you can also toss that fan as far as you can, and mount a second electric fan to the radiator. EA81's with AC where done this way, and the second fan was of a thinner design.

 

I'll look thru the pile of junk radiators I have here, see what I can determine on any differences. Can't say right this moment if there's a 2-row one in there, but there might be. Do know there's an XT6 one in there, that may be a 2-rower.

I think Vortex XT4 and 6 used a wider radiator than L Series cars , the ones I looked up for XT4s in Oz were the same height but a few inches wider .

No pics at the moment, but I can get them.

 

Anyways, I found both a 1 row and a 2 row EA82 radiators, both are for an automatic transmition.

 

Tank on the waterpump hose side is the same width on both.

Return tank is approx 13mm wider on the 2 row. I would say it's the same width as the WP side tank is.

Single row core is more centered in the tanks, than it is off to either front/rear.

Bottom locator pins appear to be centered with the center of the WP side tank on both radiators.

Both cores are the same width, tank to tank.

All mount points for the fans(s) are identical.

Top/bottom cross braces are different. Differences in the front side areas, not the fan-mount areas as I had said before this edit.

Clarifications

Hi Tom , yes I really would like to see pics of the differences in that "inlet tank" and the top and bottom straps .

 

I looked in my Factory 87 WSM and it states the single row core is 16mm and the twin row one 32mm .

 

Also would like to know if the twin core rads use the plastic/composite tanks or brass ones .

 

Will pass any pics and info onto the AuSubaru site here in Oz if thats ok with you .

Hey Disco, check out part number 1269. I have talked to Performance Radiator in Wa state. Twin core and metal tank. Closet stock in New Mexico and also quoted 182.00, and Performance does not ship out of the us. Possibly usa rad does ( i have not contacted them )
