I have the original sound system in my '86 GL wagon and 3 of the 4 speakers stopped working decades ago. I'm assuming (dangerous to do, I know) that there are fuses to the speakers. I never did anything to cause the speakers to blow that I'm aware of, they seemed to crap out on their own. If I'm right about fuse/fuses, where do I look to check them? I know nothing at all about car stereo systems.

 

I don't miss listening to the radio since the car sounds like an old truck - so many rattles and loud road noise - but I would like to have the speakers functional again.

best idea is to replace them the ones in my old sedan did the same thing.

its possible.. you could've blown the amp. I have done this.. Not much fun. Usually there's like 2 built into the stereo. one for the front and one for the rear channels. but if its the stock stereo they did things 24 some odd years ago a lot simplier. There isnt really a "fuse" for speakers you either blow them or the radio.

 

what you can do to double check this is take the speakers out, or just one, and take it inside and test it on a working radio, Theater or just something that you can easily unplug a speaker and plug the car one into. It wont hurt anything. If the speaker works, then you have your answer.

It's not worth the cost of replacing the speakers, which would be about $200 at my local Audio Express. I could get my MP3 player hooked up and have a good sound system in it but it would not be worth it either since the road noise is so loud. I just thought perhaps there were simple fuses that could be replaced.

 

I'd rather spend $200 on sound-proofing from road noise rather than have a working radio. Can't hear a person on my cell phone even when I have the Bluetooth in, that's how loud the interior is when I'm on an interstate.

If speakers are 200 dollars then you are not looking hard enough. do you have any local pawn shops? that would be a good place to start

i spent 30 bucks on my pioneer deck, and 20 bucks in door speakers. they arent expensive.

 

as far as road noise.. dang! I thought i got a lot. you could dampen it if you really wanted to i wouldnt on that car.. especially if you dont care about it that much. if you do, get grace ice/water sheild. its a cheaper alternitive.. works well.. put a couple layors of that under the carpet that'll quiet it up a bit. I bought a roll of that a while back on craigslist for 80 bucks for a 100ft roll. new probably 150?

I wouldn't not be doing any of the labor on speakers myself. And it's not easy finding speakers that are a direct fit. It would all have to look like original.

 

I'm a purist, I won't retrofit anything on my car. It has to be, and stay, looking like it did when I bought it new.

 

Twenty years from now I aim to still have an '86 Sube that looks like it did when it was brand new on the dealer's lot.

The speakers are either 5.5 inches or 6.5 inches (someone please help me out on this) and are really easy to replace and look stock. all you need is a phillips screwdriver. ( i think)

Only the front passenger-side speakers works. And they go this amp-thing that is where? Remember, the radio works fine. It's 3 speakers that don't.

There isnt really a fuse when it comes to the speakers. I've blown the amps in radio's a few times. The radio caries on like nothing happened because the part where it supplies the sound is a completely different set of circuitry. You could try this.. try and find another stock radio, if you still want it to remain stock looking and put it in. unless something happened to the wiring of the doors or behind the radio. the speakers should come on.

 

HOWEVER, speakers do just *poof* go out. especially 24 year old speakers. thats why it would be beneficial to test the speakers. replacing them isnt hard.. they are 6.5inch rear doors and 4 inch fronts apparently according to crutchfield.com.

 

so what i would do is either find another stock stereo and test it out in there, or take the speakers out and test them.

 

if you do go the route of replacing the speakers, you can keep the stock look. you dont need to use the grille that comes with the speakers. just mount them behind the door panel.

That does sound reasonable & simple. I do have someone who can test the speakers for me. I was going to have him take the doors apart anyway to clean up everything in the power windows' motors. I'd like tp put some sound insulation in the door panels at the same time.
