Throw out bearing issues. Recommendations?

Featured Replies

87 XT EA82 FWD 5sp. In my haste to put in new engine etc i'm 99% sure now that I knocked the retainer spring off of my throw out bearing and now the clutch won't engage. Of course everything else I got to work it just can't get in gear. Fail. Any tips for how I should get to the bearing? I don't want to pull the engine again. Maybe slide the tranny back or the engine forward? What's best? I'm worried if I drop the tranny I won't be able to lift it back into the car haha. I know it sounds lazy. I just hate that it's such a stupid simple thing.

Why did you put it back together even though you knew it was missing a part? Silly  If you pull the radiator, lift the engine and pull it forward you should have enough clearance to get to it. Otherwise just pull the engine, and learn from your mistakes

Pull the engine forward. IMO much easier than pulling the transmission back, especially if you don't have a rack.

i've seen the clips break, i would go ahead and have two new ones available. cheap from Subaru.

i'd give the pull forward/pull back method a try, though i've never done it. those of you saying to do it - have you gotten it to work before?

Is this something you could do through the starter hole? Make sure you have a magnet on a stick in case you drop the clip, though.

Haha yeah I got the extendo magnet for Christmas cuz I have big hands and I drop pretty much every tool into the engine bay. Good thought about the starter hole. It might be a weird angle tho. I'll be pulling the engine forward and hopefully that'll be enough. I hate transmissions tho and would hope to not have to play with it. And of course I have to wait till the weekend to start anyways.

Yes, it would DEFINITELY be a weird angle, and if you have big hands, you may need to get some child labor/girlfriend involved. I'm not even sure if it's possible, though.

Good luck. I pulled the transmission this week and found that one of the clips had broken.
