Crank Pulley tool

Featured Replies

My son's 97 Lego has a little bit of crank pulley wobble, when idling.

I suspect the keyway may be a bit buggered or maybe just the harmonic balancer worn out.

I am going to order a new pulley, but before I take the old one off, I want to have a tool to hold the new one while we torque it.

Does anyone have the pattern and dimensions of the pins for the spanner? I'd like to make one.

The car is automatic, and getting to the flex plate to hold it while torquing looks not doable with the intake installed.

the key to figuring out if it is the harmonic part of the pulley or the keyway part of the pulley is to look at the pulley bolt head. this may not be possible on the 2.5L but i could do it on my 2.2L engine.

if the bolt wobbles, it is loose and probably the keyway is damaged. if the bolt doesn't wobble but the pulley does then it is the pulley.

i have had this symptom on both my 93 which failed and my 95 which i caught before it failed. once they fail, the damage may be pretty significant. prior to failure the damage is not too bad.

good catch on seeing it before it failed. i think you can find a way to brace the flex plate even with the intake in the way.

Yeah, the bolt head is not spinning true.

I cannot even see the little rubber plug to get to the flex plate, let alone have room to jam something in there.

Guess I will order a pulley then use it for a pattern to make a tool.

Autozone says they can get it for 67 dollars. Cheapest I have found them on line is over 120 for the pulley.

I'll have to do a timing belt on my 98 OBW, and have been looking into that. 67 sounds like a good price for the tool. There are plenty of these online for 55+ plus shipping. Just search for subaru crankshaft tool.

Here's a homemade one that I found, though not sure if the time, effort, and tools to make it, plus the chance that it will break at the worst possible moment is worth it.

The way I break down the prices:

Metal plate--10-15 bucks online, haven't seen it in stores

Pipe -- ~7 bucks

Nuts and Bolts -- ~ 5 bucks

Drill bit (not every metal bit will drill high-tensile metals) -- ~7 bucks

Band saw or hole saw for the middle hole--no less than 3 bucks

so this will all come out to no less than $32 plus your time and chances of scewups, unless you already have the tools and materials.

67 is for the pulley
If it's an EJ22 I have used pulleys available. $30 shipped.

yikes, i just picked up the new one today.

It is aftermarket and does not have holes in it for the spanner wrench.

Besides the opening on top for the flex plate, is there another way to hold the engine while torquing the pulley.
