Here are a few with the rear spoiler I picked up and a few without.

A spoiler will do one of 3 things

 

1: divert air over the rear window and keep it from getting dusty/snowy

 

2: create downforce which is useful for high speed cornering

 

3: and this is the most likely one. add weight, increase drag, reduce your top speed and make your old car look foolish.

 

 

If you understand angle of attack, chord angle and have one of the few RWD Subaru's this might make sense, but with 85 hp, downforce is the least of your worries. If you're doing it for looks then that's a whole 'nother ball of wax.

That's just a deflector, not a spoiler. It will reduce dust/dirt and rain on your back window due to the downdraft created. It's not going to have any (minimal) effect on drag or performance. I'd keep it. I've had them on a couple of my Brat toppers and a few other cars. Worked for me....

I had two wagons/ squareback rigs that came with them (Subaru and S-10 Blazer)... I consequently added deflectors to the next two rigs I owned (Subaru and Toyota 4Runner). If you live in snow country or drive miles of dusty road, they are a big upgrade. They keep the back window clear when it would otherwise be covered within minutes.
