October 9, 201015 yr I picked up a 92 Legacy auto for a friend. The trans is going out, the fluid looked like oil but did not smell burnt. I thought what the Heck for $60 in fluid I can try a flush. It did not help, I will move forward in 2nd, and if you get the revs up to 5K it goes FWD in Drive and 3rd as well. Reverse is great, but it also goes in Reverse in 1st now. Strange. Not a big deal, as I have a 95 with a bent frame that has a good Auto Trans and rear diff. I think they will be a direct swap over correct? Will I also need the TCU? Thanks, Larry
October 9, 201015 yr IIR at one time those FWD auto's for a 92 were kinda pricey. Don't know why. I've only really redone on earlier than a 94. But I had a 92 with a zillion miles and the body falling off and a Subaru fella gave me money and pulled the engine, and I got the car back so he could get the tranny.

Thanks, Larry the final drive ratios are different , i think, 95 = 4.11 i'm sure. the 93 non-turbo = 3.9 i think. so swap both the trans and the rear diff. i don't think you will need the TCU, but since you have it , hang on to it. the circuit boards should be the same but the housings may be slightly different. the bracket and bolt hole may be different. (95 to 96 is different but the boards work so i just swapped the boards in the housings.) but i don't think you will need it. drive it and see. oh, the 95 will have a speed sensor on the trans, remove it and the insides should accept the speedo cable on the 93. or so i've heard.
October 10, 201015 yr Author Thanks, yes the speedo cable shoud screw right in. If I was going to keep it, I'd put in a 5sp. But hey the other guy wants an auto and I just happen to have one. I love Subarus!
October 12, 201015 yr Author I got it most of the way done today. Along with the things I expected, the following also had to be done. Rear Diffs had different axle configurations so I had to swap the rear axles as well. The rear diff studs going into the cross member had to be swapped. The Drive shaft rear section had to be swapped as the bolt pattern was different old to new diff. 96 into a 92.
