Do forester's have front and rear differentials?

 

What differential is in the rear (code number or ratio)?

 

Anyone have an estimated weight of just the rear differential?

 

My moms neighbor is getting ready to scrap a forester, and im working on a mini buggy project and if they have front and rear diffs, they would be perfect.

yes they have front and rear diff's.

 

the front is part of the transmission though, "transaxle". you're not going to be using that.

 

the rear is a separate differential unit. automatics should be 4.44 and manuals 4.11. you can verify that by looking it up.

 

if it's a 2000+ S model it would be a locking VLSD rear diff.

 

hmm, i've weighed a few and 50 pounds seems like a rough approximation.

Are these diffs. heavier then say...an ea81 or ea82 differential? im needing something light weight.

They ARE EA81/EA82 differentials (in a different ratio). They are all Hitachi R160's. Subaru has been using this same diff for over 30 years. Weight should be nearly identical.

ok, thanks guys, i thought that they were all the same but I wasnt sure. Maybe if i can pick up this diff for cheap ill be doing good.

Open diffs in the 4.111 and 4.444 ratio aren't worth much. $50 tops. They never fail and are found on every Subaru made in the last 3 decades. It's actually fairly accurate to say these are "a dime a dozen". Very little market for them since they just never die.

im gonna see if i can get the diff, front and rear axles, hubs, and front knuckles for $50. guy is a scapper and thats it, i can pry just trade more scrap metal to him as well.
