February 1, 201115 yr Hi guys. First of all thank you everyone for both sharing your knowledge as well as being patient with newbie questions like mine. Anyways... I have done a bit of searching both online as well as Haynes manual, and I cannot figure out how to get the front wheel hub off of the axle. There is a little collar thing with a slot in it that seems to hold the hub in place on the axle. It's not obvious how it comes out. Press fit? Do I need some type of a special puller to get it out? I think the axle splines start right about where the collar is, no? Here is a pic in case there is any question. Front axle, '93 Loyale (maybe a 92, I cannot remember).
February 1, 201115 yr I've always just used a cold chisel on it's o.d. where it shouders into the hub. I've had to heat them with propane too.
February 1, 201115 yr put a block of wood against the axle and whack it with a big hammer. it should pop the cone washer out. IF the axle pushes in a little, it will draw back out when you reinstall the nut.
February 1, 201115 yr Author Glad to hear it is simple. It's these little things, without having the experience, it always takes 3x as long as it should. I don't care though. It's well worth it to me to learn this stuff and become more self reliant. Thanks!
February 1, 201115 yr This is what the washer looks like when you get it out, just to give you an idea of what you're looking at. And as MilesFox said, put a piece of wood over the axle and hammer it. That's how I always do it. Don't hit the axle with a hammer directly or you'll bugger it up and have to take the angle grinder to it before the axle nut will go back on.............
February 1, 201115 yr yea, get the axle to move, or sometimes a flathead screwdriver in the notch to force it to expand. Also, a torch pointed right at the washer will usually get it to pop out too. also, the rotor is bolted to the hub, so either unbolt the rotor (EDIT: I see you already did this), or remove the caliper.
February 1, 201115 yr I usually put on the e-brake and then unbolt the rotor. And just leave the rotor there when doing axles. that way I don't have to deal with it.
February 1, 201115 yr Author Awesome. I was able to stick a screwdriver in the slot and gave it a couple of whacks and the conical ring popped right out. The busted lug bolt was easy to remove as well. I'm sure having some PB blaster soaking in for a couple of days must have helped a little bit at least. Love that stuff.
