February 9, 201115 yr Hi all, I thought I could expedite my troubleshooting. Just returned from the garage to find that my Soob won't start. It's wants to turn over but has kind of a grinding noise. I think it's the starter but I'm not %100 sure. Here's what it sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv4ADSEWCqg What do you all think? Thanks!
February 9, 201115 yr Doesn`t sound like normal starter drive failure. Might still be the starter. Sounds a lot like the timing is too advanced.Do a recent tune-up? Starter loose? I would pull the spark plugs and try again.
February 10, 201115 yr Author The weird thing is, this car has been running excellent. I just bought it about a month ago, the entire engine was rebuilt. The car only has 49k miles on it. I'm hoping it's the starter or the fuel pump or something...
February 10, 201115 yr Author Pulled the plugs, the starter won't crank; just a series of rapid clicks.
February 10, 201115 yr How is the battery? rapid clicks would suggest low voltage. A single click would suggest a bad connection to the solenoid. Try jumping a wire from the battery to the small terminal on the starter. If that works, investigate the ign swithc, or install a pushbutton. If you get the car to start, look on the dash. IF the brake warning light is glowing, this means the alternator is failing.
February 10, 201115 yr Author But the starter should still be trying to crank the engine regardless right? The starter won't crank.
February 10, 201115 yr If the battery is weak it wont really crank well at all.. However your video I've never heard a Subaru starter like that before. load testing the battery would help.
February 11, 201115 yr Author What did that noise sound like to you in my video? Remember, I literally drove my car a few days earlier.
February 11, 201115 yr i dont remember but some cars need a little spacer between the tranny and the block otherwise the start gets out on the flywheel and doesnt line up right and makes it stop th gear almost instantly, perhaps if your car had one it fell out after the shop was done or they didnt re- install

February 11, 201115 yr Author Okay, this is just too funny. The simplest solution was the solution. I don't drive my car very often, I didn't even think about the battery draining. I gave it a jump, and it started up. What in the world was causing that sound in my video? Can a low battery do that? Edited February 11, 201115 yr by TPain
February 11, 201115 yr I just had something similar, my 85 brat was running rough right after I took of and re-installed the plug wires. my issues was a vacuum plug that I had broke off on top of the engine. caused it to run like it was only firing three cylinders.
February 12, 201115 yr a low battery can do many funny things.. a low battery made my buzzer sound funny in my car
