EA82 power steering

Featured Replies

Now that the site is back up, I'll ask my question in a bit better of an area:

On an 89 GL, what is the maximum power steering pressure? Does anyone know what the fittings are at the rack? Are they the same as an early Legacy?

Relief pressure (from 88 FSM):

Turbo/MPFI : 924psi

Other: 640psi

There has been some discussion about fitting specifics, but off hand I don't remember them.

Thanks, Pat. I guess I'll have to have real hydraulic lines made.

My understanding is that more places can/will do PS hoses than do "normal" hydraulic hoses. Around here, at least some of the NAPA parts stores (the one in Poulsbo comes to mind) can build/repair them, and at relatively reasonable cost. (They carry PS hose, which IIRC does not have to be as strong as hose for hydraulic systems so is also less expensive, as are the fittings.)

I used to go to Belfair Hose since most of the companies I worked for went there and they did good work, but now moving out here I'm having to find all new places. Nearly every auto parts store claims to do hoses here, even O'Reilly's, but there is one dedicated bearing hose and industrial supply shop. They are good, but expensive and don't deal with a whole lot in the way of metric hoses and fittings.

I had mine (for EA82 pump to EA81 rack) made at my local hose/coupleing supplier - he used 3000psi rated hydraulic hose for the supply. Silver soldered JIC fittings to the hard-lines going to the rack and to the hard lines going to the pump. Works awesome - cost was like $73 for everything.

I had Belfair Hose make up a 18" line for the blade on a light tractor, and that cost over $50. Nice place, friendly people, high drool-factor for a hardware nerd. Couldn't afford to go there everyday, though.

Anybody know if you can run a MPFI/Turbo P/S pump on a carb'd P/S steering rack? looking to get more out of my power steering when running bigger tires for when things get sticky on the trail. Thanks
