Losing Power Steering Fluid

Featured Replies

'98 Legacy L Wagon(AWD and 5-speed)...difficulty steering to the right more than to the left...recently started to notice a small puddle on the ground if parked for over two days at same spot...power steering fluid seems to be low...every time I add like half a small bottle, the problem goes away...have searched to see where the leak has sprung...the container that holds it(the pump?)...all the lines seem intact...cannot seem to find the leak?!

The typical leak it at the pump. Look down behind it on the block. Fluid can also flow down the front of the block right behind the timing covers.

I've also seen leaks at the line connections of the rack, rare and at the steering shaft imput seal on the drivers side.

Generally leak at the pump unit. Some fix by replacing internal seals or o rings. I have gone to wrecking yard, bought a replacement for $35 to fix the problem.

Also look at the steering box input shaft seal and make sure it's not out of the seat and leaking.
