EA81 Power Steering Pump/Idler Pulley Servicability

Recommended Posts

Sounds like I'm getting loud bearing noise from either the PS pump or idler pulley on my Brat. I'll pop the belt off tonite to isolate those parts to be sure that's what I'm facing. Are there replaceable bearings on those parts, and if so does anyone have part numbers? If you feel chatty perhaps you could also post procedure for rebuild.

The bearing is pressed into the pully, a few taps should pop it out. I can't rember the part number but many other vehicles use the same one. Just take the bearing into your local parts store. I would be very surprised if they didn't have than 20 of them in stock.

Took it off an 83 GL wagon. I do have another 1985 Brat that has always had power steering though. No retrofit.

I did get the old bearing out and the new one back in the idler pulley. Easy job.

For future searchers here are some bearing interchange numbers I found for this application:

NSK #6204V (original)

Chicago Rawhide #6204-2RSJ (unconfirmed)

Beck/Arnley #051-3954 (confirmed and used in mine, perfect fit).

Bearing dimensions: 20mm bore x 47mm O.D. x 14mm width.

Yup, 204. That's the one.
