questions about interchanging hubs!

Featured Replies

Do you guys know if i could change the hubs in a 1986 subaru wagon with AN 1986 ACURA legend, that way i can run a 4 x 120 lug pattern with these rims i have already.?

 i want to because thet are 15 inch and good looking, and yah, ive had them for a while now..

Unfortunately, nope. There are alternatives, such as the XT6 5-lug swap and the 6 lug swap. I'm sure other people will chime in; the 6 lug swap requires modification of your original 4x140 hubs I believe. Lots of info if you search around, and you'll also find out the XT6 swap is not a cheap adventure unless you get really lucky at a junkyard

ohh ok. just wondering cus lile i said i have a full set of 15 inch forged aluminum rims that look pretty good, think i could drill the current hub with cutting the current studs?:-\

The 6 lug works because you keep two of the studs to keep the wheel aligned with the center of rotation. If you really need to use the wheels get a car they fit on, or try and find a set of 6 lugs that you like and either redrill the wheels or the hubs.

They can be redrilled to a 4 x 120 pattern - it's been done for 4 x 114.3 and even 4 x 100 so I'm sure 120 is also possible.

Correct GD. The rims are 'hub centric' mounted. You cannot just knock out the old studs, slap the rim on and drill four new holes without some reference point. You can take it to a machine shop with a rim or dead hub from the donor car and tell them you want this pattern on this hub. The have the correct tools to center the pattern. If you don't, you'll have one hell of a vibration.

ok, anyeone know if napa would drill hubs like that if i signed a disclaimer or something?

probably not, unless you were able to convince them it was for a go-kart, offroad only venture

think they could machine adapter plates all around. and slide them over all the current lugs and tap out new threads on the ones they drill

anyone know if machine shops will make adaptors that look similer to that but just 140 x 4 down to a 120 x 4? and do you think they would be safe?

Only one way to know. Start calling around to machine shops and tell them what you're tryin to accomplish. Only the shops can give you a yes or no answer and also let you know if there's going to be some sort of liability.

Adaptor plates are not the way to do it. You don't really need a machine shop either. You can get close enough with a hand drill and some patience if you know what you are doing.

They are probably hub-centric but many of us are running wheels with larger center bores than the factory rims... they do just fine. Just remove the hubs, mark out your pattern and center-punch/drill your holes. Flatten off the back side for the lug to sit flush and pound them in. This aint rocket science.

The way I would do it - chuck the hub up in my lathe and scribe a line designating the bolt circle. Then mark my 4 holes with dividers and go to town with the drill. But I have a lathe..... there are any number of ways to do it without one though.

Well I am talkin to a guy that makes adaptors, just need the hub dimensions, anyone know those? I can't find them on here. Anyone mind figurin them out for me please?

Adaptor plates are not the proper solution. There is plenty of room to modify the existing hubs. Adaptors are going to cause problems with the offset, etc.

I don't have time to measure that stuff. You will likely have to do it yourself. It's not rocket science.

Yes I know it's not rocket science. I just was not going to be out until the weekend any where near where it is. Reason I wana run plates is I dont think I can put in the hub in I was hoping to, so I was going to try plates
