EA82 low range not engaging

Featured Replies

Hey guys, this may be a bit premature, as I will be fiddling with the adjustment tomorrow, but I sent a decent working EA82 tranny into my shop to be taken apart, cleaned, and reassembled with fresh synchros. But now that it's back in the car, I am having trouble engaging low range. When I pull the lever up for low range, I have to hold the lever tight against it's stop to keep it from popping out of low and grinding an awful noise. My mechanic thinks that the adjustment doesn't need to be messed with since all the measurements should still be the same from before the trans job. I'm going to fiddle with the adjuster for low range tomorrow, but what do you guys think?

Suddenly stripped low range on a previously good working EA82?

Reassembly somehow got fudged?

Mechanic just doesn't know soobs, and is overlooking the obvious?

Its either adjustment on the threaded rod on the outside or your tranny guy goobered something on the inside. Either way me thinks he's got some work ahead of him.

I personally never seen the low range/4WD gears go bad.

its the linkage. just adjust it (i found it easiest to do from the top under the hood) and you should be fine. I put the car on jackstands and ran it through the motions, made adjustments, checked it, etc until it was just right.

I hope he put all the little balls and spring back in the right places for the 4wd and low 4wd gear engagement mechanisms - its pretty messy in there! Need a keen eye or loads of pics for every step of the way. No kidding!

Hope its just an adjustment that's needed, the other option I've mentioned would not be fun :(

Cheers
