CV Joint weeping

Featured Replies

105,000 miles on 05 OB noticed slight and only occasional smell of that nasty cv grease burning on the passenger side exhaust.

There is a small amount that appears to be weeping out of the small end of the boot. Is it reasonable to remove that metal clip and use a zip tie (or another metal hose clamp?) to tighten things up without disconnecting the axle?

Any tips on removing the clip w/o damaging the boot?

if everything else looks normal that should help.

i'd avoid zipties or at least make sure they're high quality ones. cheap ones won't hold. i've used them before for undercarriage auto stuff and if it moves at all i wouldn't use them.

i'd go with a metal clamp. i haven't been able to find any without ordering online that are thin enough to sit inside the groove intended for the clamp. but - i know folks that have done it anyway.

with a needle type grease gun insert (a dollar or two at an autoparts store) you'd be able to inject more CV grease under the lip of the boot with the clamp off. but you don't want to overfill it either.

a hose clamp works perfectly. been there done that. just keep an eye on it to make sure its still tight and hasn't slid off. curtis

Since you're on here curtis..I rambled about a fix that has worken a year with the left steering boot. Mine had separated at its neck. The bellows itself was fine. Middle of winter all that. so since an amature machining type I located a flanged plastic bushing around that ID as the tie rod OD. Flanged about 1/4", it was cut in half and each halve flange side wormed into the boot. Another similar was applied over the part/s extending. One screw clamp and it holds just fine.

sounds like a good fix to me. hey, anything that works is a good fix in my book. sounds better than my fix with just the simple hose clamp. the clamp was only a temporary solution, sounds like yours is more long term. good thinking . i'll keep that in mind next time i get a ripped boot. curtis

If you have this type of boot clamp: 15830012_dor_614068_pri_detl.jpg

You can squeeze it a bit tighter with a pair of end cutter pliers. CHA358.jpg
