painting spot on the hood

Featured Replies

got a 2inch circle down to bare metal on my hood. how do i paint it?

do i just sand, prime, paint, clear coat that tiny area?

do you blend the primer, paint, and clear coat?

y'all helped me paint an entire hood and fender after i hit a deer, but not sure how to address a small spot.

disclaimer - i am not a pro by any means, but...

here is what I would do (follow manufacturer directions for the products you are using for tack/dry/recoat times)

1. sand the area, feathering the existing paint/primer so that it feels relatively smooth when you run your hand across it. your "working" area will end up quite a bit larger than the original spot you are trying to repair.

2. tape off a slightly larger area than you will actually be painting

3. prime with a quality primer - self etching if possible

4. apply paint, usually in several thin coats, building up to desired thickness, feather edges, allow to dry completely. wet sand with very fine paper to smooth and blend edges - recoat if needed.

5. apply clear coat, usually done in one thin coat, and one "wet" coat - but follow manufacturers directions...

after all is good and dry, some light wet sanding & polishing should blend it in nicely.

Good Luck.

fortunately this thing isn't perfect anyway so it's not a big deal but i am terrible at this kind of stuff.

okay, blending happens inside taping area, makes sense, i'll give that a try.

I'm no pro but I have tackled a few paint projects, its allot easier IMHO to just paint the entire panel be it a hood or door or ?, blending well is a tricky wicket, just my 2 cents, good day all.............G
