Need help with 81 brat struts

Featured Replies

I need new struts for my 81 brat and i bought the KYB struts but they don't fit has anybody found any others that do fit or modified this to make them fit

thanks for the help

Hunting season for you. :) This happens often. People order rear struts and for Gen I and get Gen II. I could be wrong but that's my guess , that you got 2nd Gen.

They were just on eBay not long ago if that helps. :-\

Hey , that's not Brownsville up here near NYC is it?

well my struts have the right part # for a gen 1 but don't fit

and no this is Brownsville in CA

The Gen 1 cars 77-79 are often lumped in with the BRATs in databases. The BRATs have "adjustable" struts. The cars do not. However, the complete car strut will fit the BRATs just fine, if you want to go that way. The difference is a VERY small height difference.

So:

  • All "complete" struts interchange on all gen one BRATs AND cars.
  • The original Gen one car strut insert is different from the original Gen one BRAT insert. (The whole strut is different).
  • Often times I have found Gen one car struts on BRATs. So in that case, the specified strut insert for the BRAT will not fit.
  • If you see adjustment bolts on the outside side of the strut....it's a BRAT strut.

Hope this helps.
