I have 96 Legacy Outback 2.2l, 5spd.

 

I know their are a ton of threads on this and I've went through most of them trying to find this bit of information. I need to change out the two shifter bushings in the dog (pictured part) I believe it's called. The pictured one isn't the one in my car, I have the older style but the answer should still be the same.

 

My question is how to change the one with the arrow. It looks like a rivet holding it together. Do I need to grind the head off and replace it with a bolt? Does anyone know the part numbers or where I can get the part numbers for the two dog bushings for the older style shifter (not the one pictured)?

Might help to let us know what year/model your car is. Those connections changed over the years.

As olnick mentioned, year and model please.

 

I know on the 97's that side is welded in. I am not sure on replacing the bushing as I just bought the whole assembly from Subaru.

 

I have seen writeups on here of people who did this with brass bushings and i belive shoulder style bolts to increase shifter feel but with in increase in interior noise.

That piece is from a 97, mine is a 96 Legacy Outback. The piece I want to remove and replace the bushing around is identical to the one in my picture. To me it looks like it's a rivet that would have to but cut, knocked out and replaced with a bolt. I'd rather change the bushings then buy a new piece if they are available.

i did this last friday, i replaced that wit a 89-94 legacy piece that is servicable, as well as replaced all the bushings, it was cheap and easy......
