August 12, 201114 yr I am prepping one of my '84s for sale and one of the rear wheels has some rocks stuck under the metal wheel skirt ring thing. The sound they make is a little "distracting". I would normally just rip them off, but there is probably some rust underneath, and I would rather let the next owner make that decision. So I am wondering about the best way to remove the skirts or just the rocks without mangling the metal.
August 12, 201114 yr i usually slide the biggest flat screwdriver/prybar under it and lift. go around the wheel, like you are opening a paint can. good luck RV
August 14, 201114 yr For future reference I believe its called a beauty ring. not that it really matters
August 14, 201114 yr If ya break one, Ive got 3 in pretty good condition you can take off my hands. I believe I have them up on craigslist for $15 for the 3? I cant remember haha.
August 14, 201114 yr Author If ya break one, Ive got 3 in pretty good condition you can take off my hands. Thanks, I am going to try to get the pebbles out without removing the rings. I think the re-install would be the more likely step for damage. They flex a lot when I put leverage on them but don't unseat. High probability of tweakage if I go for it.
August 15, 201114 yr I remove mine off and on, and it doesnt seem to hurt them, so you should be fine, just set them on the wheel and then use a block of wood (no hammers unless you have a rubber mallet) and tap them back into place...
August 16, 201114 yr Mine come off every time I give the car a bath. They come off with the pry end of a tire iron. I smack them softly with a rubber mallet to reinstall. If they havnt been off in a while smacking them with a rubber mallet might help. That should help break the bond they have with the wheel. Then pry them off. Dont be surprised that the paint the wheels is horribly scraped up from the beauty rings once you have then off. Scrapes are inevitable. I usually scrub the wheels good, then hit them with spray wax to fend off as much corrosion as I can.
