Changed the battery on my 2005 LLBean 3.0 sedan today. With battery out I noticed a filter in the cavity close to the fender. It is a black filter and the portion I could see said oil filter on the canister itself.

 

What is this oil filter ,did not see it in the manual

Did not see it in the Haynes manual.

 

How often to change etc an any other information would be appreciated.

Could be a trans filter if this is an auto. Earlier H6's have one under the fender liner there.

 

Some people incorrectly replace them with an oil filter.

I purchased the car used with 23,000 miles on it and the battery looked original. The filter in question has written on it "oil filter". I think it is strange that it is not mentioned in the manuals.
