My new to me 85 Brat came with a weber carb bolted to an intake manifold. I'm hoping somebody can tell me if it's an 82 or not?

 

I started stripping it down to clean and discovered this

 

If it is an 82 is the airflow improvement worth getting a new t-stat for it and swapping it on when I put on the weber or should I just continue with the current manifold? Do I need to worry about the rust in the coolant track and if so what do I do about it?

That's an EA81 intake.

 

Rinse the water jacket out with a hose.

 

Clean the T-stat seat area with a light touch of ScotchBrite.

 

Or, just swap Weber adapter over to your intake.

 

An EA82 intake takes a different style adapter, should you decide to ever go with one.

Thanks! There's some other bits of rust on the intake so I guess I'll go with my current one.

I saw an ea 82 Weber adaptor yesterday on ebay, now it's gone. Harder to find as a single part purchase it seems.

 

Just for what if value:). Was looking at a EA 82 carb and SPFI intake side by side today. The SPFI intake is bigger still than the carb intake. I measured 1/16" bigger ports with a carpenters ruler. I don't think anyone has done "that" adaptor tho. It would sure use a Weber to it's potential. Take a look. Only two vaccum ports and uncluttered.

I don't really see it being that difficult to modify the EA81 adapter to fit either of the EA82 intakes so long as the overall size is correct. worse case you'd have to fill the bolt holes with weld and redrill/tape and then shape the opening a bit for good air flow. The biggest problem I would have with making an adapter from scratch would be finding a suitably sized chunk of metal, it's pretty simple.
