86 subaru gl key won't turn ignition anymore

Featured Replies

I went to get in my car and the key no longer turns the car on. It unlocks the doors and goes in the ignition just fine. There has never been an issue with it before today and I don't know what's going on. Any help appreciated.

More background info needed: Does the Key Turns the ignition Switch or is that Switch Stuck?

or it turns and anything happens?

if the ignition Switch turns and does Nothing, I Kindly Suggest to Check the Fusible Links.

Kind Regards.

turn the steering wheel a little bit back and forth?

This happened to my friend in his 00 legacy.one minute it worked, next minute nothing.Turned out the key had worn down little by little over time until it wouldnt work. he got the original gently used key and it worked fine.

This is Good Idea to Try that, Specially if the Steerin' Lock got Stall.

Also I Kindly Suggest to Spray some Lubricant inside that ignition Switch, Such as WD-40 or PB Blaster; it could help to Free a Stuck Mechanism.

Good Luck,

Kind Regards.

I once had a locksmith chastise me for this (even though I hadn't done it). She said you should never do that, but instead spray silicon lube on the key itself and work the key in the ignition (several times if needed). Apparently excessive doses of petroleum based products eventually gum-up and can cause other problems as well.

I have always done it the way she described and have had zero problems.

Agreed, Silicone for Maintenance, but I Suggested Those Oils 'cos I Believe the Mechanism could be Stuck Somehow and those could aid to Free it.

Kind Regards.
