KYB Excel-G vs. Gas-A-Just Question???

Featured Replies

First off, I have an un-lifted 86 BRAT that I'm replacing the shocks and struts on (it drives way too firm). I primarily drive it on dirt roads and just a little pavement...about 70% & 30% respectively.

It looks like KYB is the way to go, though I'm curious about the ride-characteristic differences between the Excel-G (GR2?) and the Gas-A-Just.

There appears to be a mild USMB consensus stating that the Excel-G (GR2?) rear shocks ride a bit softer that the Gas-A-Just rear shocks.

Can anyone confirm this with personal experience...or second-hand info for that matter???

Cheers,

Jeff D.

I don't have Excel-gs (different than gr2's or gas-a-just) I do have GR2's in an ea81 wagon and brat (for the rears anyway) and I like the way they ride. I also have the gas adjust in my 2x4 ea81 and that one rides stiffer, but it's still not awful, it could also be effected by the fact my 2x4 is a lot lighter in the rear. I'd say you would be fine with the GR2's I drive a lot of dirt roads as well and have never had an issue with them or found them to be annoying over bumps or other obstacles

I put gas-a-justs on both my 4x4 wagon and hatch and they were both significantly stiffer. They are nice, but not what you [OP] are looking for. I wish my dirt-to-pavement ratio was more like yours...in Bend no less.

Excel G's are the same (new name) for GR2's. I have the gas-a-just's (KG4183A) in the rear of the 87 Brat (though it is undergoing HG replacement now), and found that it rides fine, not harsh, hard or jarring by any means. The tire pressures also play a big part in the ride (and handling) characteristics.

Last month I got some new KYB Gas Adjust for the back on my 85 BRAT. I went with them because that was what was on my 83GL wagon and i loved how it rode and handled up but was not all bouncy etc, and not too squishy.

I do like the Gas Adjust, but only have Gr-2's on a legacy to compare to, the Gas Adjust is my preference at least on a Brat and GL.
