October 3, 201114 yr My 97 Outback has the factory tape deck in it and was wondering if there were some models that had factory cd players that would fit in my Outback..? sure,i could pick up a after market one but it'd be nice for something that was plug n play..(no wiring harness, install kits needed) *i did a quick search but nothing exactly popped up* Thanks,Matt..
October 3, 201114 yr Get one out of a junkyard Outback or legacy with the cable and it will plug right in. They all use the same tape/radio (outbacks have WeatherBand too, but same basic radio). My dad's 95 Brighton has a cd player out of a 93 gt in it.
October 3, 201114 yr Author ok cool,i'll have to check out some of the local JYs.. just wasn't sure if some of them wouldn't fit cause of the different size or anything..i know the tape deck is only about 1.5" tall (2" max)
October 3, 201114 yr I'm not sure about the etiquette (or lack of it) of posting a link to another forum, but this should help you: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=749402 The opening for the factory stereo is usually "double DIN". When using smaller headunits they usually add a pocket below it. The opening should be the same, though.
October 4, 201114 yr Author Jarl,no worries about posting a link to another site..(actually helped me out) it has been awhile since replacing a stock radio and the link let me know a 97s radio comes out differently then in a 94 legacy.. i got a lead on a 5 disc cd player from a Baja..double din style..for $30.just waiting to hear back from the guy..
October 8, 201114 yr Author ok..does anyone know if the factory plugs are wired the same (as far as power, etc being in the same spots)..plug from the 97 Outback harness does fit into the back of the 6 disc cd player which came out of a 02 Baja and was used in a 02 Impreza. when i plug it in,i can hear (and see it with top removed) the changer mech move but won't power on or anything.. i was like when i got it..now i'm now if my Outback didn't come with one (standard or optional) ,could that be the reason this one doesn't work did i get a bad radio.. October 9, 201114 yr Author ok so according to this page,my 97 Legacy Outback and the 02 Baja's plugs are wired the same way (wire placement in the plug, just different colors..) http://ae64.com/Legacy-pinout.htm Must have bad radio then..he did mention that when he got it,he was told it didn't work but found a cd jammed and it worked fine after that..no cd jammed this time..just won't turn on..
October 18, 201114 yr My 96 Outback came with the factory cassette stereo. I found a wrecked 98 Outback at a junk yard with the in dash cassette, cd, and weatherband, sub woofer under drivers seat and 6 disk cd changer under passenger seat. I took out the pocket thing under the factory radio and everything went right into place. There are 2 wiring connectors in the dash, one is for use if you are installing the sub woofer and 6 cd changer. Travis also got the heated leather seats, leather door inserts, fake wood dash and electric window trim Everthing cost about $150.
