Wanting to change my distributer, anything i should know?

Featured Replies

So I'm thinkin my subi needs a new distributor and I've never replaced one before but it looks prety easy. I just wanna make sure it's lined up right and ive gotten a few tips but again I just want to make sure I do it right. Is there any advice to be given. Much appreciated.

thanks for the help.I think Ill get it ok I'm just havin a hard time finding a disty for a decent price and fining out theres 2 different kinds of them for my car depending on 2whl or 4 whl drive and I found that SOA wants $588.00 for one. Hmm anyways if anyone knows where to get a good cheap ditributor please let me know. Again not sure if it should be Hitatchi, carter or denzel or whatever. I know I found them from $150.00 to $260.00 other than the only 2 left from SOA but thats way outta my budget. And by the way my 83 gl coupe 1800 is origionally 2whl but has been converted to 4wd if it makes a difference but should probably go by 2 wd

The distributors and ignition coils are matched, so if you have a NipponDenso distributor, it needs the coil that goes with it. The Hitachi disty also has a coil that goes with it. The ND coil will not work correctly with the Hitachi disty and versa-vice.

Unless you want to change your ign. coil, replace the disty with the same kind you already have. Coils are not expensive, however, so if you want to change disty types it's not a huge expense.

Thinking about what you have mentioned, is there a specific reason that you think you need to replace your disty, such as play in the shaft? If your car was converted to 4WD, was the disty switched...possibly without switching the coil?

Take your distributor slightly south and see these gentlemen:

They can take care of whatever it needs - shaft bushings, vac advance, pickup's, etc. Typically it's around $75 to $100 to have one gone through. A few years back when I was a broke college student they hooked me up with new bushings and a vac advance diaphram for $55.
