October 22, 201114 yr PLEASE HELP! I have a '96 Subaru Legacy and it is overheating. Here is what I've done: 1. Replace radiator (because it was leaking, but not overheating at the time!). Then I intermittently had overheating problems, so.... 2. I replaced the thermostat (but my lower hose stays cold). I thought I had a faulty thermostat, so I replaced it again, to no avail! 3. I've tried burping it - so far to no avail. How important is it that I have the thermostat positioned correctly? One manual says to keep the little hole toward the front. I have done so, to no avail. Someone here referred to "following the directions and watching the video here" but I cannot find them. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME? THANK YOU!
October 22, 201114 yr How did you burp the system? Some tips. Keep the front of the car up, drive it up on blocks or something. Fill the engine first through the top radiator hose, then connect it and fill the radiator. Make sure the heat is turned all the way up! I usually start it up with the rad cap off and keep filling it as it drops, when the tstat opens it might drop a lot. Top it up. cap it up and fill the overflow to the full mark.
October 22, 201114 yr Did you use a Subaru OEM thermostat or one from a parts store (Stant). Our cars really prefer the Subaru one.

October 22, 201114 yr fill the block by the upper hose. run the heat full blast. rev up the engine. sometimes you have to force it to burp
October 22, 201114 yr Yep... These things will fool you. I've had overheating / burping issues with my 94 Alpine Wagon too. I'll fill the thing, and be damned that it starts to run hot. And after the cool-down, yep, it just needed more water than I put in.
