lowering a gen 1 brat

Featured Replies

Hello all, any way to easily lower the rear suspension on a gen 1 brat? I plan on just taking a coil out at a time to achieve the ride height that im looking for up front but the rear seems a different story. any suggestions would be great.:drunk:

its a torsion bar set up should work like an old bug

I've been trying to find the best/easy way to do this for about 6 months now. I wish there were some coilovers that you could buy and just swap them out and there you go its lowered, is there such thing? or am I just going to dream:)

your probibly gonna dream unless you do some heavy mods

I pulled the front springs and bumpstops, then cranked the rear torion bars down all the way......

This was on my '78 Brat almost 10 years ago lol

now im guessing the rear torsions can be cranked up as well as down correct? if so i might have found the little bit of lift im looking for

yeah actually in the original owners manual it tells you to do it to gain extra clearance when going off road. ha ha. It tells you to put it back when you go on the road. I believe the tool kit that comes with it even has a wrench for it. lol well at least my 82 brat did ha ha

Gen 1s are a lot harder to lower then the gen 2s as the torsion bars are separate from the subframe tube instead of inside them like the gen 2s.

You'll need to pull the rear wheels, remove the lock down bolts that are close to the outside of the torsion bars (out by the wheels) and I had to use an air hammer with a chisel bit to get mine out.
