Fans run all the time and temp gauge does not move

Featured Replies

I just got the engine back in my 04 Legacy and the cooling fans run as soon as I turn the key on. I ran it for about 20-30 mins and the heat gauge did not move. Are these both related to the temp sensor?

First, make sure the defrost is off. (fan runs anytime Defrost is on)

If it still does same thing,

Sounds like the temp sensor is unplugged.

Check on the top of the engine, passenger side, under the rear of the manifold.

Triangular shaped connector with 3 pins.

Sorry, forgot to add that point that the defroster is off. I think I was on the right sensor earlier today. It is plugged in. I unplugged and re-connected to make it it was making a good connection. There was two wires going to it and I think one was white with blue trace and the other was a yellowish color. Does that sound right? That was one thing I checked over because it made sense that something was left unplugged but I can't find it!

Did anyone plug the two green connectors together under the dash?

Nothing was done inside the car. It did not do this before pulling the motor to change the head gaskets.

It is easy to "flip" the triangle shape connector "upside down" and sill have it connected with a "positive" click.

When this is done it flips the power wire over to the "fan on" pin and will keep the fans on all the time.

Unplug it and flip it back over. This time you should see that it lines up with a grove and hear a positive/louder click and not be able to pull it off the sensor like you could when it was flipped upside down.

Try that and report back.

I have attached a picture to make sure we are talking about the same sensor. If we are, it was plugged in correctly. Still no good.

Wrong connector. That's the evap purge control solenoid.

Look lower. It's that greyish one attached to the brass fitting down behind the wire harness about mid-left in that pic.
