January 22, 201214 yr Hey guys, this is my first post on these forums, but I have a 1996 Legacy GT-B that is leaking ATF from the sump seal. I went to my local dealership to buy a new gasket but was informed that there is none and to use gasket sealer. Today I removed the pan and found a 1mm thick gasket between the mating surfaces. What's the deal here? Is there supposed to be a gasket or has Subaru changed to just using sealer instead? Cheers guys
January 22, 201214 yr Welcome to USMB. You might try the search function. All the 95-2000 Subaru engines I've seen (2.2 and 2.5) use a sealer for oil pan and tranny pan. Here I use Permatex Ultra Grey for EVERYTHING on a Subaru including the oil pump and corners of valve covers when doing HG's. I'd say yours was replaced by someone tha tdidn't know. The main problem I see with this is that often these same kind of folks tend to overtighten the bolts and warp then pan. But still sealer rather than a gasket I would think would be more forgiving. Perhaps someone else here has a different experience.
January 22, 201214 yr Someone replaced the factory RTV sealant with a gasket which is a really stupid move. Clean it up and reseal it with RTV or Anaerobic. GD
January 22, 201214 yr "Right Stuff" ftw! Not a fan personally. I use Anaerobic as an RTV replacement on just about everything. It's much easier to work with and doesn't cure on the shelf. GD
