Whirring noise on deceleration.

Ya, the hubs weren't hot or anything like that. So it's hard to say what the hell is causing it. This kind of thing just annoys the hell out of me, that's all.

It's getting worse, and it's starting to really annoy my girlfriend. Which means it's annoying me doubly...

Since it doesn't change with cornering, and the hubs aren't loose. Are there any tests I can do to check for sure if it's the diff, or not?

I'd rather it be the diff... Wheel bearings suck.

So it whines almost always now, except for four cases.

Hard acceleration, under 40mph. And the important two, in neutral and with FWD fuse in.

So does that point directly at diff?

That pretty much rules out a wheel bearing. When your wheel bearing is growling, the noise is speed related, but unrelated to neutral or in gear.

My bet is on the diff.

Replaced the diff with a 56k unit, it's all quiet again :D

It sucked though. I had to sawzall off the back two bolts. It wasn't any fun.

I might have to check out the rear diff on my sedan. I've had this strange whirly grindy sound from somewhere (sounds like the front) for about a year. It's only noticable at slow speeds though.

Mine started as a high pitched whining only on decel, and only over about 60. Then just got worse and worse. At low speeds it was a nasty grumbly noise, high speeds it was a ear retching whine.

This would explain why it was making bad noise.

Norm's. $150. Blech, but 56k miles. It should last longer than the transmission.
