March 31, 201214 yr I miss how off roadable the EA series cars are. Here in the midwest, finding one that isn't rusting out is a bit of a challenge and I do love the look and power of my Impreza. I could keep searching for an EA series builder, or I am thinking of swapping a D/R into it and thereby only needing one car. (in addition to my truck and summer/sport car for fun) I have been doing a bunch of research on it and I've seen it done in a few builds (Waterwagon and another lifted Impreza) But I haven't seen an actual write up for the swap. I'm hoping to do the swap and add a write up in the build thread for my car. So far I'm operating on these assumptions. Anyone have any additional information or thoughts? I'll need the following 5 Speed Dual Range 4x4 trans from EA82 series redrilled flywheel EA/EJ adapter plate Axles from a 93-94 Front Wheel Drive Impreza to match the EA spline Longer drive shaft (Would this be a lengthened Impreza or EA82 shaft?) The sensors for speedo etc. swap over right? Any thoughts on the long term reliability? I know a bunch of you have put EJ18s and EJ22s into your EA series cars. Mine is the EJ22. Does the dual range handle the power of the EJ over time? I want this car to go to Alaska and back (Not kidding. Actually plan on driving to Alaska in the next year.) In theory, would I boost my fuel economy by being able to drive in front wheel drive most of the time? How does the wiring link up from a D/R to an EJ series car? I'm sure there's more questions, but this should get the ball rolling.
March 31, 201214 yr I have a complete dual range 5spd with everything required to swap into an ea82. For the impreza, you supply the hybrid trans mount, and sjr bellhousing adapter. this comes with flywheel, u-drill it. 3.9 diff included It also includes and ea82 driveshaft. I do have parts for putting and ej trans in an ea82 body: custom driveshaft and hybrid trans mounts. hollar at me as i am your local source for this trans. I would consider th leftover impreza 5spd as trade for the legacy. $300 local pickup everything included.
April 11, 201213 yr have to make sure your rear dif matches the final drive of the d/r trans. i dunno what the final drive of your impreza is. i have a 220k mile D/R trans behind the EJ25 in my car. used a Napa replacement clutch kit for a EA car and its held up just fine for probably 8000 mostly city miles since last july when i put it in. granted, i dont drop the clutch off a green light or anything, but if i had to downshift and punch it its been fine.
