EA82T Studder/Cut Off

Featured Replies

Excess EGR flow will certainly cause a misfire, but, not from leaness.

The resulting exhaust gases will contain more O2 than normal and the not so smart computer will see this as a lean mixture.

I strongly suspect the shudder is indeed the knock control computer pulling timing.

Pretty sure I said so a few thousand posts back.

I experienced a similar shudder under hard acceleration w/my ea-81t until switching to 94 octane.Checking this on the ea-81t is as easy as plugging a voltmeter into a check connector under the dash and monitoring the phase correction signal voltage.Same applies for the flapper MAF ea-82ts.

(not sure about the check connectors on ea-82s,but,it is easy enough to tap into the wire).

I haven`t bothered doing it yet on my car because I consider the lack of studder w/94 octance proof enough.

One day w/I`m bored,I`ll check it for giggles.

Hmmm maybe the pressure between the turbo and the head is enough to push the egr open.the egr solenoid he has now has a vent where as the original one did not. So its not pushing the egr closed until enough boost to bypass the vent is acheived.

this problem isnt under hard acceleration its under mild acceleration/ cruising

He said it runs perfect under hard acceleration

This problem seems to be under 3k rpm.

Theres also a slight rattle from the exhaust, like a tiny unicorn jumping around in the cat.:D

Right after he bought it the nipple on the egr solenoid broke off

So he replaced it with one off an 85 brat.

Shortly after that this problem appeared

Which leads me to think thats the issue.

Atleast thats how most my problems get fixed. I retrace my steps.

Now im just thinking out logical reasoning for my theory..

Ive been wracking my brain for a few months trying to solve this..

Thanks for all your input... I did the fuel injectors like you had originally suggested but I will check the knock control computer.

The EGR Solenoid I pulled off the the brat only has two hoses and it does not have the vent. The one I got from you did have a vent but I couldn't use it due to the connection.

The solenoid from the brat is a metal canister type versus the one from the 85 GL was plastic.

This is true...

Unfortunately I think it's a Gremlin... that's where he lives when he's not driving me crazy!:banghead:

Dam gremlins! Lol

Hmm Well now i need to think up something else...

The car sat for 16? Years

Maybe a bad fuel line?

I worked on a ford focus that had a pin hole in one of the fuel lines

And it was hard to start would stall and had a studder.

Have you read the plugs yet? Take em out and see if she's running rich or lean

Or it may be running perfect

I think the solution will come by process of elimination.

Going to try qnd get a new egr solenoid. Lines look good, no rust, I cleaned the injectors with little change, I think I'll look at the fpr, fuel pump next.

You brought up and I have reseacrch a clogged cat... my question is if I just knock that thing out will it throw a code or am I OK to knock it out?

My gl10 had the cats knocked out and it ran fine. No codes

While your at it replace the 02 sensor, Or atleast Pull it out so it doesnt get damaged while you knock out the cats.

Also try to keep peices from going into the mufler. They will not come back out.

Ask me how i know lol..

Have fun! They dont make it easy to do lol.

I have a crow bar with the cats name on it... I'll pull it apart this weekend.

BTW, started welding on the BRAT last night:banana:

Awesome! I got friday off so i may have to come Out and give you a hand.

You know... You have a welder so you could just delete the mid cat and put striaght pipe there.. Might be easier.

FIXED!!!

I knocked out the cat but when that didn't fix it I got my head into the engine bay and noticed the coil wire was arcing. I replaced the wires, rotor and cap and she runs great now... Good as new.
