5spd manual transmissions

Featured Replies

90 leg 2.2 362,000 miles, 5 speed manual...I doubt anything has been done to the transmission, what service is suggested, if any? I am starting to get a grind going into 3rd.

Change the gear Oil. That's all you can do really. Some people recommend Redline 75w-90NS to help with slow synchros. But at $15 per quart it's $$. The transmission holds 3.5 quarts of oil. Standard 80w90 gear oil from the auto parts store shelf will work fine.

To have made it to 360k, someone has taken care of that transmission. Without proper oil changes they don't often make it much past 200k.

If you want to bandaid it lucas makes good tranny addatives. Idk if they have a specifically m/t oil or if you could put 1/2 qt of the at addative. Its super thick. U gota squeeze it out of the bottle so even if its for at it wont be too thin. Worth trying. Id look at their site for a mt one

this.

Change the gear Oil.

the engine oil has probably been changed 50-100 times and the gear oil how many....?

I did notice the dip stick to the transmission was a little low... and what color should it be? I assume there is a drain plug under neath

yep, drain plug underneath just as you suspected. pull plug, drain gear oil, refill through the dipstick tube up top. just like engine oil basically but no filter.
