a/t flashes at start up

Featured Replies

my 95 impreza a/t flashes at start up , but goes away after a few seconds , not sure if this is normal ? 137,000 mi

This is not normal and someone here will fill you in on what it is trying to tell you.

My guess is you may have some AWD torque bind problems (possibly a bad duty "C" solenoid?)

Do you find you are having issues when making slow, tight turns? Does the car slow down and need more acceleration when turning in to a parking space, etc.?

If it flashes 16 times, it is telling you to read your transmission codes because there is an electronic problem.

Either GD or Garry posted the self-diagnostic process in detail the other day. Do that instead of guessing what the problem is.

no tight turns ,but the abs light is on also. only flashes like 5-6 times, where is the duty c solinoid ? i have already drained fill of tranny , i will put fuse in to see if light comes on and flashes go away,if that does not fix problem i have read that you can make it fwd all the time not sure of location ?

They Duty C solenoid is in the tail housing of the tranny. Not a bad fix, just time consuming. If the Duty C is bad, putting in the fuse will have absolutely no effect. The solenoid is necessary for the FWD to work. I think you will have to do a repair before you cause internal damage to the tranny.

ok, 16 flashes on start up , put fuse in light on dash came on fwd , whats the cost of duty c solinoid ? or used ? can it be picked up at parts store ?

your best price is going to be at subarupartsforyou I think the soleoid cost is about 109 or 125. Replace it and your torque bind will go away too as the fail safe is full lockup.

Before you order one thou, go thru the trouble of pulling the codes and be sure it isn't another sensor.

This.

Sorry, my mention of the duty C solenoid was probably premature. It sounds like it may be something else in the AWD.

If the solenoid is gone there is no way to make the trans FWD. It has a full time fail safe and you MUST replace the solenoid. Find out what the codes are that it is throwing and let us know what they are and maybe we can help you to trouble shoot the fix.
