Slip feeling in the rear awd. 92 Legacy lsi

Hi all. My girlfriend bought a 92 Legacy sedan AWD lsi with the 4 spd auto for 500 dollars a few months ago. It had a bad crank angle sensor that I modded to the later model cps. So it runs and drives sweet with only 125000 on the ej22NA that's in it. In front wheel drive. When it has the rear driveshaft in it and the 2wd fuse is out, it drives great also. On taking off with the awd on though, it has a slipping feeling before the rear engages then it gives a light clunk and goes. It feels like it's kicking out a little when you speed up after going around a corner also. Otherwise, it seems to work fine during normal driving. I was wondering if you all could point me in the direction of what might be out of adjustment with it. It has a matched set of tires, the tire pressure is set to the door placard spec. There doesn't seem to be much rear diff. play in it. I was thinking the clutches in the rear of the tranny might need a adjustment or something along those lines. Idk though, this is my first dance with the Subaru AWD setup. My car is a 2wd Loyale 5spd. Other than that, I like the car and would prefer she keep it for years. If the little fella has to be driven fwd it'd be ok. I want to play with it too though! lol.

the transfer clutch drum gets notches worn in it over time and the plates hang up, i think. pretty sure that's it. there is good info here on the repair using a dremel type tool to smooth out the grooves.

 

hopefully some can direct you to the thread with the info. i have not had a lot of success finding it even though i remember reading ti when posted.

this sounds about right, and it may be related to some vague memory I have of some early 4EATs needing a steel sleeve replacement kit instead of the aluminum one in some part of the wet clutchpack system.

 

maybe someone else knows more about that.

Thanks guys. Now that I have some idea of what to check, I'll get on to digging around on here and see what I can find out to get this thing fixed.

i think some pics were lost during a server episode, but maybe not. i feel like i have seen a couple recently.

 

an exploded parts views can be had at http://opposedforces.com/parts you would be looking for the transfer clutch which is in the transfer case on the rear of the trans.

 

good luck.

 

also, you could just locate a replacement transfer case / clutch and swap it out. but the reapair is an option. one drum is bolted to the trans shaft, if it is worn it is hard / impractical? to replace (i don't remember which one wears) and the parts swap will not work as a simple solution.

 

EDIT:

i found these pics , but no detail on the wear on the drum/s. just a guess from the pics, but the wear must be on the trans drum, not the one pictured.

 

if when you open it up, you might consider replacing the duty c solenoid, pictured, to avoid going in again. it is a pretty common fail point in these at high mileage. but if you have more time than money and enjoy working on/ learning about stuff, it could wait.
