July 18, 201213 yr So as im finally getting my brat running again im debating on what issues to adress next and one thats heavy on my mind is leg room. I am about 6'1" and my legs tend to rub on the steering wheel :/. SO, what is the best solution to cramming me into this thing in a more comfortable way? I figure I could try and figure out how to mount a slightly smaller steering wheel but will make turning more cumbersome and the other thing I thought about was maybe a cheap ebay racing seat mounted as close to the ground as possible. Anyone else have this issue? Solutions?
July 20, 201213 yr A steering wheel with more offset should work really well. Granted I can recline the seat back on my 74 but the offset wheel makes it much easier to get my legs under and around everything and its still about the same diameter as stock. Also 6'1"
July 20, 201213 yr Well, it is a Gen 1 Brat?! You gotta expect that from a sardine can powered by a hamster wheel. But I do relate as I feel cramped in mine too. I kind of like it.
July 20, 201213 yr I'm 5'10" so i have no good advice for lleg room but i agree, always liked that my car felt more like a go-kart

July 20, 201213 yr Author Well, it is a Gen 1 Brat?! You gotta expect that from a sardine can powered by a hamster wheel. But I do relate as I feel cramped in mine too. I kind of like it. Haha yeah I knew what I was getting into when I bought it, just really love the go-kart-ness of it...just not the knees hitting the wheel part. I Started looking around yesterday and supposedly the Hub adapters for the 80's brat works?
July 20, 201213 yr get a steering wheel like my dads project brat im working on for him and it will look like a go-kart:lol: Make model and hub adapter part numbers please. That looks awesome.
July 20, 201213 yr Make model and hub adapter part numbers please. That looks awesome. im in bend right now and live in sandy maybe sunday when i get home no adaptor plate i think it just bolts on:cool:
July 21, 201213 yr Author Sweet, let us know when you figure it out. Won't be till at least the first of the month before I can buy anything else but definitely on my list of things I want to do asap.
July 23, 201213 yr ok guys i seriously think this it a go-kart steering wheel thats custom because it doesn't have any numbers on it/brands measuring it with my hand then back at my house its 9in from the inside so its small but it gives more leg room i can get pics/measurements of the back if u want so u can make it
July 28, 201213 yr I removed the head liner in mine and installed wxr seats as low and far back as possible. I am 6'2 only bad thing is to mount the seats low all the forward and back adjustment stuff has to be removed. So its fixed seating. Left the stock steering wheel -daniel
August 1, 201213 yr found the exact steering wheel on ebay(expensive:eek: but its a 10 inch steering wheel;))http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-SUPERIOR-500-10-1-4-INCH-STEERING-WHEEL-STREET-ROD-CART-CAL-CUSTOM-NICE-/170725116538?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27c0028a7a&vxp=mtr personally i would get this one only $22.99 http://www.ebay.com/itm/5890-10-in-diameter-steering-wheel-/280548802235?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item415202febb
August 2, 201213 yr Author now I just need to figure out if the hub adapters for the 80's model works...pretty expensive to gamble on.
August 7, 201213 yr take the seat back out, you'll gain a few inches but loose support (not that there is much support in a gen 1 seat lol)
August 8, 201213 yr I'm 6'5 and fit fine... don't know why you all think it's so tight, maybe its not height but weight?
August 10, 201213 yr Author haha well everyone is different but my knees hit so maybe since your a littel taller your legs go just behind the wheel....and im 165pounds so doesn't have anything to do with that
October 26, 201213 yr I'm 6'5 and fit fine... don't know why you all think it's so tight, maybe its not height but weight? I am 6'5" too, what is your inseam? (My inseam is in the 36" range) I am seriously concidering getting a 78' Brat, my only issue is that I have never sat in one and this one is about 2 hours away from me. I have issues with sitting in a Rav4 so I am kinda concerned that it might be to tight for me. :-\ So I am trying to asses where other people my size are at in one. Thanks for your time. Heath
November 2, 201213 yr I did two things to get more leg room on my 81 brat: 1) First I removed the plastic accelerator pedal, now it's just the metal stub. This allows you to stretch the accelerator leg out a little and move it around which helps on the longer trips. 2) I found a momo wheel from the local dump shop for $5 and eventually picked up a momo 7301 boss kit for a reasonable price. The wheel is slightly smaller and adds a bit of offset which gives a little more room.
