September 26, 201213 yr Search function not working for me. I'm curious as to whether or not the auto trans in my 1996 legacy has a governor or not. Any one know???
September 26, 201213 yr A mechanical governor controlling line pressure and shift points, no. It's a fully electronically controlled transmission. Top speed governor, probably, but that's a function of the ECU not the TCU. What's the problem you're having with it?
September 26, 201213 yr Old transmissions used to use govener/throttle pressure to make shift points, now it is all done electronically.
September 26, 201213 yr Author Just wondering about top speed capabilities. A buddy of mine does autocross with his Honda and I wanted to get in on some, but didn't know if I would have to wait till I swapped to a manual. Edited September 26, 201213 yr by soobie_newbie67
September 26, 201213 yr That is more limited by the ECU then the TCU. In reality it is also the physics of the driveshaft, speed rating of the wheels, and aerodynamics vs power of the engine.
September 27, 201213 yr Author Yes I know. Thank you. But, is the car gonna stop speeding up when I hit 100 like most cars do??? Sorry for beeing a nag about this subject. I'd find out for myself but my timing kit won't be here for a week.
September 27, 201213 yr One word, well one word with four parts... TIRES i do not know what you have planned, but make sure your tires are up to the job. Get the proper speed rated tires. Always go one speed rating higher for high speed driving.
September 27, 201213 yr Author Just got new Michelin tires. Traction and temp are A speed rating is T
September 27, 201213 yr Most autocross doesn't have speeds over 50mph, so you'll never be close to the speed limiter.
September 27, 201213 yr Author If I can afford to get into it I'll show ya. My buddy had gotten this Honda up to 110 in some of the races he's been in. If I get this career job at firestone I'll be able to afford to go once in a while on my free time. Hey. What about rally??? I always thought it's more fun.
September 28, 201213 yr You're not gonna hit 100 in an autocross. If you're hitting 100 it's some closed track. Not a walmart parking lot. Also, you're not gonna hit 100 at a rallyx. And yes, the rally scene is much more fun. I do lots of rally stuff. Between doing rallyx events, and helping out at the pro rallies. Even helping work on cars, it's the most fun you can have. The L model cars are limited to about 112, the GT ones don't have a speed limit. My 96 L with a 5speed wouldn't go over 112. It would just stop accelerating. ECU thing. My 98GT with an automatic will go... Well beyond the end of the 120mph speedo. And yes, of course I did this on a closed track
September 28, 201213 yr Author Yeah. My buddy goes to Oregon to race. Washington has notracks. And rally is more interesting to me anyway.
