2000 Power Steering into a 98?

Featured Replies

Has anyone put the newer 2000 Legacy Power Steering pump into a 98 Legacy? It looks like if you pulled the complete system and hoses it would bolt right in.

Looks like the newer Power Steering pump does not have the same leak issues as the older pumps.

Are you seeing fewer leaks on the new pumps?

Thanks, Larry

you could try to verify pulleys spacing by seeing if the power steering belts and crank pulleys are the same or interchangeable between two given years.

i've never replaced one of the new pumps, not sure if it's because average age/mileage is less or they are more robust though, i have no idea.

one reason may be the reservoir o-ring that always leaks is now gone. every single leaking power steering pump i've seen leaks at the oring between the reservoir and pump. the new system doesn't have that any more, the hoses are likely more robust. so that means fewer system leaks and fewer systems run low on oil.

Picked up the conversion kit from the UPAP about $75 for everything. I'll let you know how it goes.

Does someone make a conversion kit for this purpose? Never heard of it. What are the components?

Nope, just pulled everything off a 2000 Legacy. Looks like it will bolt right up.

the pump bracket that bolts to the block might be different. I've ran into that on a few of the Gen 1 Outbacks. The 3 bolts that actually bolt down the bracket are the same on both Gen 1 and Gen 2, but one of the pumps is slightly wider iirc

Yep, I got everything including the bracket. Now I just need to find a good 2.2 to drop in. Thanks, Larry
