steering rack rebuild

Featured Replies

Has anybody here ever rebuilt their own power steering rack?

I've got mine torn apart, since it was leaking profusly from one end. I got new boots, and new seals, but I'm not quite sure how to get the one seal out.

I know the FSM shows a special tool, of course.

So, just wondering if anyone has done this before and if so what they used.

Thanks!

Apparently nobody has, so I will document mine, and post it to the repair manual.

I have been going thru steering rack nightmares too. the reman unit I just installed is hard to turn to the right and now I need to swap it out again:mad:

I was tempted to tear it appart but dont have the time to do it right.

I would like some more info if any one has it.

I would convert over to manual steering like who the guy that had my car befor me I dident do so I am no help on this mod but I have to say its Great my car turns great you dont even notice that you dont have power steeing.

i have nothing to add to the rebuild stuff, but on pulling a seal, i like the method of drilling a small hole and using an appropriately sized self tapping screw to thread down in the seal. then pull it out with the screw head.

racks are fairly easy to replace and don't fail too often, might be easier to replace used.
