March 24, 201313 yr Don't know if I'm posting in the right spot or not but... I'm the proud owner of an 88 GL wagon EA82 2bbl 240k on the odo and I'm trying to figure my options regarding my distributor. Typical signs ie: play, intermittent tach twitch, and missfire on acceleration from stop to turning When I look one up online from schmucks and it shows me the 4-pin fool infected dizzy, mine is not the optic system. Question being, can I swap to the optic dizzy? I used one of them kits once on a 73 Ford and same year Chev to upgrade the ignition system. Same principal isn't it?
March 24, 201313 yr backlash in the timing belt can cause a jumpy tqch. something to consider since the disty is driven by the cam.
March 24, 201313 yr Author No miss fire when the tach jumps... Example: Rollin at 60mph 3000 rpm fifth tach twitches up by 500 or so drops back to 2750 rpm or so no stumble or hesitation loss of power or noises
March 25, 201313 yr you have an 88 with a carb? is the engine swapped, as it should have been spfi for the year. maybe it's a late 87? either way, if it's carbbed, look for 85-86 year listings for '1.8 ohc' listings
March 25, 201313 yr Do you have the denso, or hitachi distributor(denso=brown cap, hitachi, black) I also think it could be something else. If the tach twitches but the engine doesn't miss or seem affected the its probably not the disty. More likely a dash issue. Anyhow hitachi = 85,86 Denso = 87 All 88 are FI withy the 4 pin optical. No you can't use that disty. Edited March 25, 201313 yr by Gloyale
