98 outback fan problems

Featured Replies

Have a 98 outback came in smashed rebiult it now fans will not shut off they run whenever car is running ac is disconected is weird have never had thiss before tried unpluging heater control no diff changed ecu no diff any ideas anyone had thiss happen before. Also have been geting many of theese cars with only the ds fan working is there somthing in the fan control i'm missing like a one way diode or override realy or somthing driving me nuts

Remember there are 2 CTS - one for the dash, one for the ECU.

Radiator fan is running all the time?

Tried swapping relays?

If its the interior blower fan there is a short between the fan and switch. The fan is constantly powered w/ key ON and is grounded through the resistor block and speed switch.

Treid diffent realys treid differnt heater switch fan realy fan motor cts when disconected car changes and sets cel so think its working car has no cel on when running is like the realy is getting trikkle voltage from somwere just enuff to turn on realy. not very often i struggle with somthing but cant figure thiss one out. I wonder if a bad alt could do thiss ? just cant get the rad fan to shut off

ECU grounds the fan relays. If you're sure there isn't a short between the relays and ECU, the ECU is bad.

The fail safe for a bad coolant temp sensor reading is for the ECU to command the fans on fulltime, but it should also set a code at the same time.

I would check over the harness in the area that the car was smashed. I fixed a forester that had some really strange electrical issues caused by a twist n' tape repair to the harness in the left front corner. They taped the wires together with duct tape, then used electrical tape to bundle the harness back together so it looked right. Took a bunch of solder and shrink tubing to get it back working right.
