Okay I'm seriously thinking about getting a shell for my 86 Brat.

 

Can anybody tell me how these shells attach to the Brat?

 

 

I guess it might become apparent when I actually see the shell in person. It is not close to me to check out, going to have to make a road trip to get it.

I've got a brat cap on my 85 it uses the tie down that are built in to the sides of the bed. Just some j-bolts that go through a bracket on the shell with a nut on top pretty easy.

Do the chrome bed rail tops stay on or come off?

Generally, they stay on.  The seal is usually designed around the trim.
