Hi all

Can anyone tell me if a tranny from a 1990 Legacy LS wagon will fit in a 1995 Legacy wagon?

The 95 should still be the 2.2 right?

I'm hoping it's plug and play...lol

Mechanically it will, but the gear ratio may be different. check the diff tag. The harness may have different shaped plug at the firewall end.

Wiring and electrical differences would be the major holdup. In 95 Subaru switched to OBD2 and all of the engine and trans electronic control system had to change. Not sure how much actually changed with the wiring inside the transmission, but body-side there are differences.

 

Final drive ratio is another concern.

I can bring the rear diff along, so that would take care of the final drive ratio.

OK... how about this?  I've got a auto tranny with no reverse....any ideas?

check here for the ratio in the 90 lego.  Final Drive Ratio 90 - 94

i'm pretty sure it is a 4.11 ratio.

the 95 lego auto trans has a 4.11 ratio.

 

the obd is a non issue. the wiring, brain and electrical components did not change until 99/00.

so it will fit plug and play.

 

if you read up on the end wrench articles you will see that they did tweak the auto trans a bit in the early years, but not so it will not run.

the bottom line is, if the plug on the trans is the same it will fit, plug and play.

Auto trans with no reverse is the first sign of total failure. The forward gears will stop working shortly. A total rebuild is the only good option for that one. Easier to just replace it with a good used one.

 

Which car are you putting a trans into? The 90 or the 95?

LegacyCentral.org is dedicated to first gen Legacys and may have specific info about compatible transmissions.

 

Also check Car-part.com for used transmissions nearby.

the trans would be coming out of the 90 (donor) and going into the 95 to replace the failing one - providing everything would work "properly". Otherwise we would find a used one of the appropriate year.

 

I did do a bit of wiring schematic comparison between 90 & 95 trans wiring - not real sure about things working "properly" as there are a few differences in the way the wiring is run from the 2 main plugs to the TCU and other components... more research is required! LOL

 

or maybe we just find a decent used tranny & make our lives a lot easier!

the wiring in the car has to match the computers in the car.

since you are not changing the computers it is a non-issue.

 

all 90 - 98 auto trans in the ej22 cars are the same model, TZ102Zxxxx.

the last 4 characters of the number are all letters for the legos, like AAAA for 95 and ABAA for 96.

 

in 96 with the ej25 cars they started the the TZ102Z2 xxx with the second 2 indicating the 4.44 ratio in the outback, GT and LSi.

 

but all the trans 90 - 98 are the same basic trans  the TZ102Zxxxx .

the only difference in any of them is the final drive ratio.

they are all interchangeable.

they are the same trans.

 

not until 99 did they change the trans (phase 2) when the started with the TZ1A2Zxxxx trans in the outback and GT.

the lego trans was different that year as well, but i do not remember the the number off hand.

i'd have to look it up to be sure, but i bet it also is a TZ1A2Zxxxx.

 

swap it.

I would try Johns advice first and just see if the harness plugs match. You may be able to swap harnesses and have everything work.

wiring diagrams show the 2 main plugs to be the "same" - one 12 pole plug and one 16 pole plug.

 

the 95 has the second O2 sensor, so there will be a harness for that as well, that the 90 doesnt have, but that shouldnt be a problem to swap over.

 

Sounds like I will be going to pick up the car on Tuesday - gonna trailer it home. Will be able to do a bit more investigative work then.
